Housed within a tier one research university, the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia is a comprehensive, nationally-­ranked art school administering undergraduate and graduate programs in areas of studio art, design, art education, and art history. The Lamar Dodd School of Art has over 40 full-time faculty members administering undergraduate and graduate programs to over 1,300 students. Our vibrant community fosters a creative atmosphere for innovation.

Faculty are provided numerous resources for advancing research, including a private studio or work space, computer, access to a wide array of tools and technology, and opportunities for travel and research funding.

Facilities

The Lamar Dodd School of Art's Main Art Building is housed in a spacious, eco-conscious building located on east campus in close proximity to other facilities dedicated to the arts on campus, including the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, the University of Georgia Performing Art Center and the Georgia Museum of Art. 

In addition to the Main Art Building, the Dodd operates out of four additional buildings on three corners of the University of Georgia's campus. These separate buildings include the Thomas Street Arts Complex, Broad Street Studios, and the Ceramics Building.

The Dodd’s facilities and equipment are state-of-the-art. Studio faculty and graduate students are generously accommodated with their own dedicated studios.

Galleries

The Dodd Galleries is dedicated to understanding and promoting contemporary art as a tool and catalyst for education. The Galleries consist of five exhibition spaces that act as laboratories and testing grounds for innovation located among our classrooms and studios. 

The Athenaeum is a non-collecting contemporary art gallery affiliated with the University of Georgia. It is an experimental educational resource for students, faculty, and for people in the Athens community at large.

 

Full-Time Faculty

 
Assistant Professor, Art History (Early Modern or Renaissance studies)

The Art History program at the University of Georgia Lamar Dodd School of Art invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment to begin August 2025. We seek a scholar of visual and material culture of the Early Modern period (c.1300-1700). Successful candidates will engage a global approach, one that prioritizes intellectual and material exchanges between Europe, Africa, the Near East, Asia, or the Americas. A candidate’s research focus may lie within any of these geographical areas, while addressing broader early-modern histories such as global trade, religious and social transformation, humanism, technological advancement, enslavement, and empire.

In addition to an active research agenda, the position carries a teaching load of 4 courses per year at the graduate and undergraduate level. Mentorship and advising of both graduate and undergraduate students is expected, as is participation on graduate committees. We are a collaborative community in which faculty may co-host visiting artists and scholars, develop new cross-listed curricula, and participate in initiatives across the School of Art and Franklin College. For instance, faculty in Art History are encouraged to engage with the Georgia Museum of Art in their research and teaching through on-site class instruction, faculty or student-curated study galleries, and courses in the college’s museum studies certificate program. We would also welcome new approaches to early-modern technologies that might connect with UGA’s growing interdisciplinary programs in AI and digital humanities.

Successful candidates will have a proven record of active research and an emerging or established reputation within Early Modern or Renaissance studies.

Interest in teaching courses that contribute to the college’s museum studies certificate program, collections or curatorial component is preferred.

Lecturer (Art Education)

The Art Education program at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia invites applications for a Lecturer position in Art Education with expertise in online instruction, digital art education, and contemporary art pedagogy. The person in this role will have an opportunity to influence student perspectives on critical and cultural diversity through contemporary art and cultural pedagogy. Successful candidates will join a vibrant interdisciplinary community and contribute to the field of art education and online teaching and learning at the University of Georgia.
 

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in person and online.
  • Teach two sections of Cultural Diversity in American Art each semester, a course developed and administered by the Art Education program that satisfies a general elective for the entire university.
  • Assist in administering an online MAED program.
  • Collaborate and liaise with the University’s online unit.
  • Actively contribute to the art department community through building a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

  • Teaching experience: ideally 2-3 years of K-12 teaching experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Evidence of digital art instruction
  • Evidence of administrative skills, including but not limited to curriculum development, budgeting, and communications.

Part-Time Instructors

 

Studio Core Interdisciplinary Pedagogy and Practice Fellow

The Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia invites applicants for an instructor and research position under the title of Interdisciplinary Pedagogy and Practice Fellow. Responsibilities include teaching two studio courses within the Studio Core area, including, potentially, Ideation & Methodologies and/or The Principles of 3d-Design in both the fall and spring semesters. In addition to teaching, applicants are expected to contribute to the development of material- and spatial-design curriculum while actively pursuing their creative work. This one-year appointment carries modest compensation, research support, a private studio, and full access to UGA facilities for research. 

Candidates are required to have completed an MFA in studio art or M.Arch architecture within the last five years; preferably, with a broad spectrum of knowledge regarding evolving genres, e.g., community-based practice, design, digital fabrication, urbanism, post-internet, and/or screen-based approaches. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to evolving their creative work while at UGA. Research conducted during the position will be presented through a solo exhibition or lecture in the School of Art early in the spring semester. 

This position will begin August 2025 and conclude in May 2026, with the possibility for renewal for one academic year. The final application deadline for full consideration is 4/11/2025.  Applicants should submit a letter of interest that summarizes their qualifications and research interests; a current curriculum vitae; teaching philosophy; 10 images of creative work along with 10 images of student work; and contact information for three references to james.enos@uga.edu.
