The Dodd Sectioning Office assists students and faculty with the registration process for School of Art courses.

Helpful information pertaining to the Dodd's schedule of classes, answers to commonly asked registration questions, and more can be found below.

Fall 2025 Studio Class Opening Dates

April 4

UGA Ticketed registration opens 

  • See the Registrar’s Office website for more details on ticketed registration 

  • Reference the Spring Undergrad Studio Course Guide for a list of studio courses and CRNs that correspond with your area of concentration, major, or minor 


April 21

UGA Open registration begins & select Dodd classes will open to all Art majors  

  • Classes previously listed as Area specific majors only, will open to all Art majors 

Note: The process of opening classes is done manually by School of Art staff, one class at a time. This process will begin at 8 am. Your patience is appreciated. 

     Example 

     ARST 3205 Video Concepts and Practice: CRN 36682 

  • April 4: Ticketed registration; reference the Undergrad Studio Course Guide for permissions 

  • April 21: Certain courses will open to all Art Majors  

  • Please note, there are other sections of ARST 3205 available to Minors and non Art Majors ahead of April 21, see the Undergrad Studio Course Guide  


July 17

Certain Dodd courses will open to Design and Media Minors, Studio Art Minors and Non-Art Majors 

     Example 

     ARST 3205 Video Concepts and Practice: CRN 42796 | TR | 11:00-1:45 

  • April 21: Certain courses will open to all Art majors 

  • July 17: Certain courses will open to Design and Media minors, Studio Art minors, and Non-Art majors 

Note: Art Education, Graphic Design, and Interior Design courses, restricted to Art majors only, will not open to minors and non-art majors on July 17.

Studio Art Minors and Design & Media Minors, please refer to the Studio Course Guide or to Athena (in the restrictions area of each course) to find the sections of courses available to minors. 

Art majors, especially those in an Area, please register for classes during your ticketed time. Open seats will be made available to all Areas and minors as indicated above. 


How to Request an Override or Directed Study

Requesting an override into a class or wanting to take a directed study?

1. Undergrad-level Override I Grad-level Override I Undergrad-level Directed Study

Instructors should utilize the online request form.

When contacting an instructor to request access into a class, provide them with:

  • the course number
  • the course CRN
  • your 811# and UGA email address, and
  • a link to the form

If there is not an instructor listed for the course, contact the Area Chair.

ONLY THE INSTRUCTOR OF A COURSE CAN SUBMIT THIS FORM. If a form is submitted by a student, it WILL NOT be processed.

PLEASE NOTE: Sending the form to an instructor DOES NOT register you for class. You will need to complete the registration process in ATHENA once you have been notified that the form has been processed.

Time conflict override needed? Email the Sectioning Office directly for instructions.

2. Grad-level Directed Study

Please use the School of Art Graduate Directed Study Proposal form when requesting a graduate-level directed study. Return signed and completed form to the School of Art Graduate Office. Should you have any questions, please email the Graduate Office at gradarts@uga.edu.

* Notes on Graphic Design Courses (ARGD)

All ARGD courses for 2023–24  (except ARGD 2010) are for accepted graphic design majors only: No prerequisite overrides or enrollment permissions will be granted.

Override requests for ARGD 2010: Graphic Design Survey (spring term only) must come through an Art academic advisor.

Help! I'm having trouble registering for my classes!

Below are answers to commonly asked registration questions. If the answer to your question is not below, please contact the Scheduling Office.

  • There is a hold on my account.
  • ​How do I register for a waitlist?
  • I need to change my internship credit hours (or variable credit hour course).
  • How do I see if a class is for Art majors only?

If you receive a message that there is a HOLD on your account while attempting to register in ATHENA, click on HOLD. Follow the directions to clear the hold.


How do I register for a waitlist?

Use these instructions from the UGA Office of the Registrar. 


I need to change the credit hours in a variable credit course.

Examples of variable credit courses include ARST 4930: Internship in Art and GRSC 7770: Graduate Teaching Seminar.

How do I see if a class is for Art majors only in ATHENA?

Some of the courses we offer are open to any UGA student, some are restricted to Art majors or minors, and some are restricted to specific areas of concentration. Search for a class in ATHENA using this link and find the "Restrictions" heading (see below).

I'm trying to register for a class, but I'm getting the following Registration Add Error message from ATHENA: “Prerequisite Course(s) Not Met"

You are receiving this message because you have not taken the prerequisites.

If you are interested in this course, enroll in the prerequisite course this semester so that you may take the course you've attempted to add in the future. Prerequisites can be found in the Bulletin.

Contact the instructor of the course for further discussion regarding prerequisites. If permission is given by the instructor to enroll in the course without the prerequisites, provide them with the course number, course CRN, your 81#, and a link to this form TO BE SUBMITTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR.


I'm trying to register for a class, but I'm getting the following Registration Add Error message from ATHENA:

This message indicates the course is full. If you would like to register for a course that is full, contact the instructor of the course and ask for special permission. If permission is given, provide them with the course number, course CRN, your 81#, and a link to this form TO BE SUBMITTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR. If permission is granted, you will receive an email to register for the course. 

PLEASE NOTE: Refer to the Course Opening Dates above. It is likely that Dodd instructors will not enroll students into full classes until AFTER all Dodd classes have been opened to all UGA students.


I'm trying to register for a class, but I'm getting the following Registration Add Error message from ATHENA: “Permission of Major Required”

This message indicates the course (or specific section of the course) is restricted to specific majors or areas of concentration. Some of the courses we offer are open to any UGA students, some are restricted to Art majors, some minors, and some are restricted to specific areas of concentration. Search for a class in Athena using this link and find the "Restrictions" heading (see above).

If you are not an Art major, but wish to take a Dodd class, please reference our Class Opening Dates to see when you will be able to register for any remaining seats.


Can I audit a class?

Undergraduate Students: Undergraduate students may audit a course for the current term with the permission of the instructor.

Graduate Students: Graduate students may audit a course for the current term with the permission of the instructor and the dean of the Graduate School.
